Harekala Hajabba Family and Initial Life
Friends, Harekala Hajabba was born in the poor rural area of New Papdu, Karnataka. Harekala Hajabba was born in a very poor family.
At the age of only 6, Harekala Hajabba started working as a beedi maker with his mother to help his family.
Being born in a very poor family, Harekala Hajba could never go to school. Due to lack of education, he had to face many problems in life. Therefore, despite being illiterate, he understood the importance of education very well.
After growing up, Harekala Hajba started selling oranges. From this he used to earn about 150 rupees a day. Harekala Hajba was somehow making a living for his family by selling oranges.
Once a foreign couple came to Harekala Hajba to collect oranges. The couple asked Harekala Hajba the price of fruits. But because of not knowing English, Harekala Hajba could not explain to him the price of oranges.
Harekala Hajabba Social Work
According to Harekala Hajabba, at that time he felt helpless and took a vow that he would do something for the education of the children of his village so that no child should face such situation in future.
At that time Harekala Hajabba did not even have his own house to live in, but still he started a small school in a mosque in the year 1999 by investing all his hard earned money.
In the beginning, only a few children used to come to school, but gradually the number of children started increasing.
By the year 2004, Harekala Hajabba collected more money and bought a small land for the school. However, after investing all the accumulated capital, he could only buy land.
He did not even have money to build a school. For this he sought help from politicians and wealthy people.
Many people helped Harekala Hajabba, while many people rebuked him from afar. However, by adding little money and taking help from the people, Harekala Hajabba started ‘Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Upper Primary School‘ in the year 2004.
There were 4 teachers in the school to teach the children. Later on, Harekala Hajabba got help from the government also.
What started as a primary school, later developed into a secondary school with an area of more than 1 acre of land.
Harekala Hajabba dreams of setting up a pre-university college in his village later on.
Harekala Hajabba may never go to school himself, but he understood the importance of education and devoted everything to the education of children.
Awards Given to Harekala Hajabba
Social activist and writer Ismat Pazir has published a book on Hajabba’s life titled ‘Harekala Hajabba Jeevan Charitra’.

- In November 2012, the British Broadcasting Corporation published an article on Hajabba with the title ‘Indian education dream of the illiterate fruit-seller’.
- Harekala Hajabba has been honored with the ‘Real Heroes’ award by CNN IBN and Reliance Foundation.
- Harekala Hajabba was named Person of the Year by Kannada Prabha, a leading Kannada language newspaper.
- In the year 2020, the Government of India selected Harekala Hajabba to be honored with the Padma Shri, the country’s fourth highest civilian award. However, due to Corona, he was given this honor in the year 2021.
